Being economic with the truth?
There can hardly be a better known or wider circulated image from Corfu than that of the small 11th century Byzantine Monastery of Vlakherna at the end of a tiny man-made causeway and, beyond it, the island of Pontikonisi in the centre of a landscape of sea and mountains framed by myrtle, cypress and olives. This ever repeated image seems to represent - on postcards, book covers, dish clothes, on web photo sites like Flickr, and other souvenirs of Corfu - all that is serene, refreshing, fecund and reassuringly traditional about the island, but zoom back and pan north from this iconic image and what do you see and imagine hearing?
The lower picture shows Vlakherna and Pontikonisi under the flight path of Kapodistrias Airport and the multi storey hotel that overlooks the scene.
